Sign Language

A fluent, signed interpretation of the film, delivered as a synced video track in your signing language.

Sign Language (SL) provides a native, video interpretation of the film by a fluent signer — the richest, most natural access for many Deaf audiences, carrying tone and emotion that text alone can't.

KinoSync plays the signer as a synced video on your phone, kept in time with the screening. Choose your signing language and position the video where it suits you, then watch the film and the interpretation side by side.

For many Deaf people who sign, a signed interpretation is not a fallback for captions — it is their first language, and it conveys performance, rhythm and feeling in a way written text can't. Sign languages are distinct languages in their own right, which is why KinoSync supports more than one: British Sign Language (BSL), Indian Sign Language (ISL) and American Sign Language (ASL) among them, so the interpretation matches how you actually sign.

Because the signer plays on your own device, you decide where the video sits and how large it is, keeping your eyes free to move between the interpreter and the screen. And because it's delivered through the app rather than projected for the whole room, every ordinary screening can offer it — not just a rare scheduled session.

Sign Language: questions answered

Is sign language the same everywhere?

No. Sign languages are distinct languages — British Sign Language, Indian Sign Language and American Sign Language all differ. KinoSync offers interpretations in more than one signing language so the track matches how you sign.

Why choose sign language over closed captions?

For many Deaf people who sign, a fluent signed interpretation is their first language and carries tone, character and emotion that text alone can't. Both tracks are available on KinoSync — you choose what suits you.

How does sign language work at the cinema with KinoSync?

Open KinoSync, choose your film, select the sign language track and press play. The signer plays as video on your phone, in time with the screening, positioned wherever suits you.
