What 'accessible' actually means
A fully accessible title generally carries three separate tracks, each for a different audience. Audio description narrates the on-screen action for blind and low-vision viewers, in the gaps between dialogue. Closed captions render the dialogue, speaker cues and meaningful sounds as text for Deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers. Sign language provides a fluent, signed interpretation for audiences who sign — and in India that means Indian Sign Language (ISL), a distinct language in its own right.
When your film needs it
In India, the CBFC accessibility requirement for theatrical certification takes effect on 15 March 2026, and OTT platforms are introducing their own accessibility expectations. Internationally, broadcasters, festivals and streaming platforms have required audio description and captions for years. If you plan to release theatrically in India, stream on a major platform, or travel the festival circuit, you should budget for all three tracks from the start.
